About Me - Layne vanRhijn
Aerial View of Oldman River Winding Through Lethbridge, Alberta

I don't have much of a story, but here goes...

To be honest, I didn't much care about photography until about 2013 (I was about 23 years old at the time). For the past few years I had been taking photos of farms and acreages using a custom built RC helicopter  (www.AerialVantageMedia.ca). This was a little side gig my wife and I had on our days off that we enjoyed doing together and provided a great opportunity to see Western Canada.

Although I enjoyed flying the heli, the actual photography side did not interest me that much. I did however thoroughly enjoy buying enormous amounts of photography gear which I rarely used.

As funny as it sounds, what really got me hooked on photography was when I downloaded Adobe Lightroom to replace the now-defunct Apple Aperture. Prior to this I could never seem to get the colours right in my photos and there was always an issue with printing them correctly.

Adobe Lightroom fixed all this for me.

I quickly became comfortable in the intuitive-to-me Lightroom interface and photos were finally looking like I wanted them to. Once I was comfortable in Lightroom a whole new world in photography opened up for me and I've been hooked since!

Aerial imaging and Real Estate photography work is still very much my "bread & butter" when it comes to photography, however I greatly enjoy spending time outdoors doing wildlife and macro shoots. Recently I have also been working on more commercial imaging and event photography.

I have won several photography awards over the past few years, and recently was a runner up in the Canadian Geographic 2017 Annual Photography Contest for my "A Cold Winter's Night" photo of Lethbridge, Alberta! Pretty exciting for me and a great motivation to "up my game".
